Step 4: Specify search options

visual search pony options

Go to the “Options” tab and specify video organizing options:

  • “List all files” enables the program to include all found video files to results list, thus creating some sort of content based representation of your video library, where files are grouped according to what they contain, instead of a filename, location or extension. Use that option if you just want to browse your video library in the way, similar videos are grouped together, even if they have different resolution, encoding, filename or located in different folders.
  • “Compare first 5 minutes” radio button, provides a possibility to perform more accurate (and slower) retrieval, by comparing the first 5 minutes of each pair of video files instead of first 20 seconds, which is default behavior. Enable this option if you have some movie files, that have identical beginning, but different continuances.
  • “Autoselect by …” radio buttons allow to automatically identify which video files are originals and which are duplicates, so you can later delete or move duplicates with one click, leaving originals on their places. “Autoselect by modification time” means file with earliest modification time is original, “Autoselect by size” – biggest is original, “Autoselect by duration” – longest and “Autoselect by resolution” – the higher resolution one.

Step 5: Start retrieval

Click the “Search” button to start retrieval. Visual Search Pony will scan the selected folders for duplicate video files. Found clips are compared against each other and grouped together if they have similar content.

Since there are many video formats in the world, our software determines duplicates on the basis of the visual content of files. For this, the program processes each file and generates it`s short signature which is compared against signatures of other files. This process is also known as visual search.

To index video, Visual Search Pony processes only the 20 seconds (or 5 minutes, if you specified an appropriate option) of each video and stores a calculated signature in cache, so that next time you need to organize video files, the program can re-use cached signatures and process only new clips.

Step 6: Remove duplicate files

When the scan is over, Visual Search Pony shows results as a list of thumbnails, each representing a particular video. For each file, the program displays context information such as path, resolution, duration, date of last modification and a checkbox indicating the file status: duplicate or original.

Notice: since displaying 10000 and more thumbnails simultaneously can affect performance of you computer, the program only shows first 3000 thumbnails. Use “View > Show next  1000 thumbnails” and “View > Show previous 1000 thumbnails” menu items to control which thumbnails should be shown.

Usually people want to remove duplicates and leave all original files as they are. Visual Search Pony automates this process. For each group of similar files, it can identify the original by comparing modification dates (or other criteria, specified in options) of files in a group. The file with the earliest modification date (or highest resolution, or longer duration or bigger file size, depending on the chosen option) is considered to be an original.

The program automatically puts a tick into the checkboxes next to duplicates and leaves the checkboxes of original files unchecked. This lets you remove duplicates quickly and leave original files where they are.

Click "cut duplicates to clipboard" icon to cut duplicates to the clipboard

Double-click to open the item in the default viewer (assigned for this file type in Windows Explorer settings)

Click the item to view it in the preview area (images only)

Step 7: Save workspace (optional)

There is a possibility to save current workspace to a binary file, so you don’t need to perform search again each time you need to review found items. Use “File > Save Workspace” and “File > Open Workspace” menu items for that.

Final step:
